Building the Foundation: Preparing the Student Body

We are almost there. Now that the staff is ready and the Student Justice Panel leaders have been trained, it is time to get the broader student body prepared for the implementation of this new structure, including communicating to them the need to use it responsibly if it is going to be effective.

At East Bay Charter Academy, schoolwide roll out happened through advisory classes. The Student Justice Panel, including their teacher coordinator, created a series of lessons that all advisory classes throughout the school carried out. These lessons followed a journey similar to the SJP member training, though on a much more basic level.

Advisors led their students through an exploration of their beliefs about justice and the ideological differences between restorative and punitive justice, followed by a lesson about restorative justice in the world, using specific historical case studies as examples. Students were then introduced to the specific structures and process of the SJP at East Bay Charter Academy. Finally, SJP leaders broke into multiple groups and visited each advisory classroom, giving students a chance to offer their feedback, express their concerns, and ask questions to clarify the process.
